Canning Ring Rag Sunflowers

Last year I came up with these little upcycled rag sunflowers using old canning rings and lids. It took a little tweaking to get the process more efficient and neatly finished, but I finally have it figured out.

These actually look really cute in many different shades and patterns of fabric. I like using subtle prints like plaid or polka dots. I have used quilting cotton, but usually I get sheets at thrift stores and use RIT dye to color them if needed. As long as the fabric is cotton it will dye well. I have also used curtains, tablecloths, and duvet covers.

Sometimes I add β€œleaves” by tying longer scraps of green fabric to the backs of a few petals. There are just so many ways that you could customize these. I want to try one with lace soon. My aunt made one with denim! If you make one send me a picture through email, Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest! I would love to see it!

Supplies:

  • scrap fabric pieces (each about 2” by 9”)

  • canning ring/band

  • used canning lid, spray painted black

  • small square of burlap, a little larger than the canning lid

  • 3” wood circle

  • 12-15” piece of jute twine

  • hot glue gun

  • scissors

How to make canning ring rag sunflowers

Fold a piece of fabric in half. Pull the center of the fabric through the middle of canning ring from the back and put the ends of the fabric through the loop. Pull to tighten. (It is essentially like those old latch hook rug kits!) Continue until the canning ring is full, making sure to loop the fabric in the same direction each time.

Trim the ends of the fabric to create an even flower. Fluff.

Fold the twine in half and loop over the ring in the same manner. Tie a knot in the end.

Place the sunflower upside down on a hard surface. Place the burlap over the black side of the canning lid. With the burlap down, press the canning lid into the back of the canning ring. It will not fit because of the bulk of the fabric, so pressure must be applied to bend and dent the lid towards the front of the flower. This will make if fit snugly in place and curve slightly outward.

Tuck the ends of the burlap towards the center. Place hot glue along the edge of the back side of the canning ring. Press the wood circle over the back to conceal the burlap and create a clean surface for hanging against a wall.
