Men's Shirt to Indigo Peplum Top

My daughter really loves the Indigo sewing pattern from Project Run and Play and I wanted to try sewing one in a woven fabric instead of knit. I love that there are no buttons or zippers to worry about (which also makes this a great option for charity sewing projects!) You can get all of the details on how I adjusted the pattern on the Project Run and Play blog!

I actually used a 2XL men’s button down shirt from my repurposing stash for this project because I thought the plaid was perfect for fall! I cut the bodice from the sleeves and lined it with blue quilting cotton. It took a bit of fenagling, but I was able to cut the peplum and sleeves from the main body of the shirt.

The front peplum was centered on the front button placket, which was then sewed shut. I liked style, so I sewed a piece of button placket on top of the front bodice for decoration. Finally, I hand sewed the buttons to the front using a closer spacing than the original shirt.

The butterfly sleeves make such a bold statement in this piece, but they used up a lot of fabric, which is limiting when you are working on an upcycle project. I would like to try this again using the sleeveless version and cutting the bottom of the shirt for a gathered skirt.

The Indigo Peplum top can be sewn using woven fabrics with a few adjustments.
