Upcycled Sun Dog Mitts

I absolutely HATE the cold! So, I absolutely LOVE these new mittens!

Sofiona Designs just released the new Sun Dog Mitts pattern and I decided to try sewing a few. I didn’t want to leave my warm house to go fabric shopping, so I dug through the pile of partially disassembled thrift store sweaters that I was using to make snowmen.

The first pair is made from an Old Navy fleece top. I wanted something relatively plain to be able to do some hand embroidery from the Warm Winter Collection that I helped with last month. I also added buttons and beads to the snowflakes because I thought it was cute. They are lined with a heavy fleece and I used rib knit for the double cuff.

If you want to try embroidered mittens, here is a little video on how to transfer the embroidery designs to a dark fabric with texture:

The second pair is made from a cable knit sweater with the single cuff option. It worked really well! The inner tops are made of anti-pill fleece, simply because I ran out of leftover sweater material. I lined the mitts with french terry, which makes them roomier and more lightweight. I will stick with fleece next time.

Like all Sofiona patterns, this has been extremely well tested with thorough attention to detail. It has extra shaping and durability in construction. They also have an option for a leather pad on the inner top or you can use waterproof fabric for play in the snow. The pattern is sized for small children through adults. So everyone can stay warm in this miserable weather!
