Fall Scented Playdough

Playdough is a special activity in our house. It can make quite a mess and I even have some crunchy spots in the carpet from about 10 years ago. We still get it out sometimes; however, I have to supervise and they are supposed to keep it on placemats at the dining room table.  The beauty of restricting playdough so much is that when I do get it out, they are occupied for a very long time. I can get a lot of stuff done! If we are out of playdough, I just make some with a few basic ingredients from the pantry. It is really easy and there are a bajillion recipes out there you could use. I use this basic recipe and it keeps forever, as long as the kids don't let it sit out. I also like to adapt it and make different scents.

For our September MOPS open gym I made a few batches of fall scented playdough for the kids to play with and everyone was able to take some home. Our October meeting focused on play, so we included the recipes in the newsletter, too. I was using what I had on hand, so I made pumpkin spice, ginger, and coffee!

You can use the basic recipe and adjust the scents as desired. I like to add peppermint extract to make a batch before Christmas! The scents will wear off after awhile since the playdough keeps so long. Also, if it smells good enough to eat, everything is technically edible.

Homemade Playdough

1 cup flour
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/3 cup salt
1 cup water
1 Tbsp. vegetable oil (can substitute other oils)

Pumpkin Spice- 2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Ginger- 2 tsp. ground ginger
Coffee- 1 tsp. coffee extract

Mix dry ingredients in medium saucepan. Add wet ingredients and cook over medium-low, stirring constantly with a fork until mixture begins to thicken and stick together. It takes about 5 minutes. At this point food coloring may be added if desired. Remove from pan and place on a sheet of wax paper. Cool for a few minutes and knead well.

Store in a sealed bag or air-tight container.
