Upcycled Quilt Limestone Coat

If a flannel shirt jacket is called a shacket, I have officially decided that this is called a “quacket!”

Far too long ago, a friend of mine gave me a beautiful, whole cloth quilt. It was yellow on one side, but had some faded spots and she thought that I might be able to dye it or come up with some way to make use of it since it was otherwise very well made. I believe it may even be hand quilted!

When Sofiona Designs put out a tester call for the Miss Limestone Sleeve Add-On I decided the time had come. I used a few bottles of Rit Dye that I had on hand to see what would happen. The yellow side became a rust-brown color, but was still too uneven to be usable. The white side of the reverse turned a pretty shade of purple, so I went with it. I made the unlined version of Miss Limestone because I wanted to see the rusty color inside and reduce bulk.

Cutting the coat pieces using the quilted design was a fun challenge and created some unique patterns in the coat. I used a black poly-cotton blend from my stash (also given to me by a friend) for the binding, facings, and trim. I do wish I had also used it to line the center of the hood because using the quilt made it a little stiff. The black also adds a really sharp contrast that I love! I folded the front binding to make it a little narrower since I hated covering up too much of the quilted design in the front.

This quacket is so cozy! Believe it or not, wearing it is like being wrapped in a quilt! So it is like a Snuggie, but stylish! Haha!

Take a look at the behind the scenes process! It has some cameos by Pringle the cat! Haha!

You can get the Miss Limestone bundle in the Sofiona Designs shop which includes the coat and sleeve add-on. This is obviously a perfect pattern for upcycling!
